LONDON, Dec. 19 (AP) — Denis Payton, a former member of the Dave Clark Five, a rock ’n’ roll band that had several hits in the 1960s and toured the United States as part of the British Invasion, died on Sunday in Bournemouth, in southern England. He was 63.

The cause was cancer, a spokesman for Mr. Clark said.

Mr. Payton appeared on all the group’s records, playing the saxophone, guitar and harmonica and singing backing vocals.

The Dave Clark Five, whose “Tottenham Sound” was London’s answer to the wave of hit records pouring out of Liverpool in the 1960s, chiefly by the Beatles, scored with songs like “Bits and Pieces,” “Glad All Over” and “Over and Over.” The band broke up in the 1970s. In October, it was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mr. Payton is survived by his partner and two children from a former marriage.

Another band member, lead singer and organist Mike Smith has medical troubles too. Tragedy struck Smith on October 15th, 2003, when he suffered an accident at his home in Spain, which affected his spinal chord. He became paralyzed from the waist down with no movement in his right arm and limited mobility in his left.
